The Songs All Sound The Same

“The Songs All Sound The Same” by The Supersuckers.
Released in 1992 on Empty Records. Re-released in 2001 Mid-Fi Recordings.

This is the record that never should’ve been. in October of 1990 we went into a friends’ studio to record some songs we had been kicking around. We had just parted ways with our lead singer up to that point and we wanted to see how the band sounded without him. When we were done,we were pretty convinced that we’d need a new singer pronto. but that‘s when things got a little weird. Everyone we played these demos for (and that’s exactly what they are – demos) seemed to think that we were on to something. Now, I never wanted to be the singer in a band, but then again I never wanted to be the bass player either, but, since I happened to know all the words, I got the job.

We made up about 50 cassettes or so (because that’s what you did in 1990, you made cassettes) and passed them around to our friends. I’m not exactly sure how it happened, bot one thing led to another and the next thing you know,we were agreeing to put some of these songs on singles and actually release them to the public. Then a friend of ours asked if we would be willing to put all these singles on one CD, like a real record or something! Well,we must’ve been so damn flattered (or high) that no one ever said “Hey, these are just demos, they sound like shit!” and a record was born.

Regardless of how we feel about the performances on this recording, the fact remains that people dig it, and it was the start of what has been an incredible and enduring ride. -Eddie Spaghetti, 2001
